I am a senior undergraduate student in the Engineering Department at Hofstra. My concentration is in civil engineering with a strong focus on structural engineering. I am working with Prof. Segal on the development of a rapidly deployable polyester-rope suspended footbridge. The motivation behind this project came from noticing how many people in flood scenarios get stranded with no way to escape. A bridge that could be deployed from the back of a pickup truck across floodwaters could be a lifesaving tool in this unfortunate situation. The project’s objective is to develop a 10-m span prototype that would be able to pack into emergency response vehicles and be deployed efficiently.
